Colourful honeybees in Spring!

It is not carnival in a bee hive, but a special method to record the homing behaviour of honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica) under field conditions.In Spring 2007 eurofins-GAB worked out and tested a method to mark bees in the field and document the homing behaviour of the bees to their hives.

A short summary of the method:

o build an observation hive
o put it in a field with flowering plants
o wait for good weather (no problem this year!)
o paint the out flying “chicas” in the colour you like today (paint marker or opalith- plates)
o now sit and wait! 
o yes, if they have enough, the girls will come back – or not ...
o clean your glasses and have a look!
o through the windows of the hive you can adore the coloured beauties.
